That string of numbers and letters on your tire isn't random — each part tells you something useful. Here's how to read it, using 225/65R17 98H as an example.
The first three-digit number is the tire's width in millimeters, measured sidewall to sidewall. In 225/65R17, the tire is 225 mm wide. A bigger number means a wider tire.
After the slash is the aspect ratio — the sidewall height as a percentage of the width. Here, 65 means the sidewall height is 65% of 225 mm. Lower numbers mean shorter, sportier sidewalls; higher numbers mean taller, more cushioned ones.
The letter R means radial construction, used on virtually all modern tires. The number after it (17) is the wheel diameter in inches — the tire fits a 17-inch wheel.
The trailing number and letter are the load index (98 = how much weight the tire can carry) and the speed rating (H = the maximum safe speed). Matching these to your vehicle's requirements matters for safety. When in doubt, we'll make sure your replacement matches.
